James Adams (BA)
An
energetic painter and sculptor, who has made his home on the
west coast of Scotland and joins a growing rank of skilled
practitioners who wonder if merely being in Scotland adds
a uniqueness to their thought process.
After
graduating, James pursued a dual lifestyle, involving both
a musical and applied arts aspect. He started up his own metal
work and sculpture business in London.
Concurrently with this he also recorded and released three,
successful song based albums.
Although attaining musical success and acclaim, James was
determined to return to his roots in sculpture and painting.
To
this end he had to set about two refurbishment projects. One,
to reinstate the old "smiddy" - in Blair Atholl
- to a working Blacksmiths forge and gallery and secondly
set up a home and artists studio on the Isle of Skye.
In his painting, he is continually seeking to further his
mastery in using a naive style - (generally most often associated
with St Ives and the work of Alfred Wallis (Wallace in some
sites).
James
hopes to break down the relationship between subject and viewer,
by reminding us of the (unadulterated and with "perspective
free") visual memories we were once capable of.
His subject matter often highlights a tension within the landscape,
offering a familiar, silent glimpse of a moment in time, or,
in the case of his sculptures, creating a shadowy presence.
A polite,
intelegent and considered thinker, an independant mind...not
a follower!
