Ingrid Fraser
Ingrid Fraser BA hons, Fine Art
Ingrid is a painter using oils and creating mixed media drawings. Her work sits somewhere between observational drawing and impressions of her experience, or perception of the landscape in an abstracted form. Working both in situ and from her studio, she creates ethereal landscapes in a painterly style by building up different layers, with drawn marks, glazes and opaque areas of paint. She enjoys the versatility of working in oils as a material that can be worked wet on wet or built up slowly over time. There is always a struggle within the paintings: to pin down the mercurial element of a place that led to the decision to paint it.

Her drawings are atmospheric experiments with themes or stylised motifs that will often recur in a series of studio paintings. She uses drawing as a tool to discipline her mark-making, but also as an important element to her creative process sitting alongside her work in oils. The drawings form emotive responses to the play of materials on the paper surface that aim to evoke the Scottish landscape.

Born in Argyll, with roots in Moray, Angus and the Orkney Isles, Ingrid has settled on the Moray coast where she works from her studio near Burghead. She obtained a BA(Hons) in Fine Art from Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen and has exhibited in shows across Scotland and in London, with works purchased for public and private collections. A prize winner in the 2007 Jolomo Awards, Ingrid is continuing in a great tradition of painters rendering impressions of the Scottish landscape on canvas.

"Scratch The Surface" Mixed Media on Paper 83x65cm £425
“My depictions of Scotland are translations on canvas and paper of my experience of this place. My connection to the subject is as important as its apparent beauty or bleakness; the idea that someone else has previously left their mark on the place is also an on-going theme behind my paintings. I see these landscapes as living places marked by those who have made their lives there. These are living landscapes with histories ranging from ancient Pictish settlements to 19th and 20th century hydro schemes; from historic to contemporary agriculture, fishing and land management. They have their futures too. I wish to create pictures that mirror the marks we leave on the landscape with an honesty that also accepts the captivating effect of the rugged, windblown, changeable beauty of this land upon us.”
